The Merrick Associates formed under the direction of Robert and Eva Mae Merrick in 1974. The mission of the Merrick Associates is to fulfill the dream of founder E.D. Merrick in providing the people of New Brighton and Beaver County with an art museum and cultural center where education and appreciation of the visual and performing arts, in their several forms and varieties, can be fostered and enjoyed.
As Beaver County's only fine arts museum, The Merrick is in a unique position to serve as a comprehensive cultural center embracing the arts and humanities. In a community largely shaped by its industrial history, the Merrick Associates undertake to provide cultural experiences that enhance the quality of life for its constituencies. Central to this is the founder's express desire that access to and education in and about the arts is the ongoing purpose of The Merrick.
Classic collections of eighteenth and nineteenth-century paintings and artifacts of natural and geological history as well as a collection of 19th century books make up the core of The Merrick museum holdings. In house and outreach workshops, classes, recitals, exhibitions, and performances help to carry on the mandate for education in the arts. In all these activities and with their reciprocal relationship with the schools and various community organizations, the Merrick Associates work to see that the Merrick Art Gallery holds an esteemed place in the region.
